How to cancel OpenAI (ChatGPT) (and get a refund)
Cancel ChatGPT Plus/Pro inside ChatGPT settings — the API is billed separately and isn't a subscription you 'cancel'.

- Sign in at chatgpt.com, click your profile > Settings
- Open the Subscription section and choose 'Cancel subscription' / 'Manage'
- Plus stays active until the end of the current billing period
⚠️ The app-store trap
If you subscribed to ChatGPT Plus in the iPhone app, the charge shows as APPLE.COM/BILL and you cancel it in iPhone Settings > Subscriptions — not inside ChatGPT.
Can you get a refund?
ChatGPT subscriptions are generally non-refundable except where the law requires it; cancel before the renewal date. API charges are usage-based — you stop them by not using the API and can remove your payment method in the platform billing settings.
Easy-to-miss gotchas
- A ChatGPT subscription and OpenAI API usage are two separate charges
- The API amount varies with usage — it isn't a fixed monthly fee
